The guidelines are file A-50/29/2025-ADMINISTRATION DIVISION-I, dated 25 March 2026, signed by Rahul Sinha, Under Secretary. The work is at Shram Shakti Bhawan, Rafi Marg, New Delhi. A stipend of Rs 18,000 per month is printed for undergraduate interns and Rs 20,000 per month for postgraduate interns, only if performance and attendance are satisfactory. The guidelines PDF is on the Ministry site: labour.gov.in internship guidelines PDF.

What an internship is, in plain words

An internship is a short, fixed period of work while you are still a student. It is not a job. The Ministry says this seat is temporary. It does not become a claim for a later appointment. You learn how a government office writes notes on labour law. You do not join the Indian Legal Service by finishing this.

What the Ministry of Labour and Employment actually does

The Ministry handles labour and employment policy for the Government of India. The guidelines name three things interns should see: how policy is written, how labour laws and industrial relations work, and how social security schemes are run. The office named on the letterhead is Shram Shakti Bhawan, Rafi Marg, New Delhi. The contact number printed for the Under Secretary is 011-23718922.

What kind of seat this is

This is a full-time, in-person internship at the Ministry in New Delhi. Duration is two to three months from the day you start. The Ministry may extend it up to four months if the project needs it and your work is fine. The programme is offered in two cycles in each financial year. The guidelines do not print the month names of those two cycles. Up to 10 interns may be selected in a batch and placed across wings of the Ministry. No application fee is printed. The Ministry does not give a house, train fare, or food. You arrange your own stay.

Who should apply — and who should skip

Apply if you are studying LL.B., B.A. LL.B., or LL.M. from a recognised university in India, or a postgraduate degree in Industrial Relations, Labour Laws, Social Work, Statistics, Mass Media, Economics, Public Policy, Information Technology, or a related subject. You must not be more than 30 years of age. You can upload a curriculum vitae, a statement of purpose of not more than 500 words, and a recommendation letter from the Head of Department or Faculty Advisor.

Skip if you are still in Class 12, or in the first year of a five-year law course and have not reached the years the grading table uses. Skip if you cannot stay in New Delhi for two to three months at your own cost. Skip any WhatsApp message that asks for a form fee. The guidelines do not print a fee. Skip a lookalike site. The only host named is labour.gov.in, or a link the Ministry notifies separately.

What you may actually do

The guidelines list tasks the Ministry may give you. They are legal and policy research on the Labour Codes and the Rules under them; analysis of industrial disputes, case-law trends, and legislative precedents; drafting policy notes, briefs, and internal memoranda; helping with data, impact assessment, and comparative studies on labour reforms; and writing up practices in social security and labour welfare. You work under a Mentor Officer. At the end you submit a final report or paper. A certificate comes only after that report and successful completion.

Selection

  1. A Selection Committee set up by the Ministry reads the applications.
  2. Selection uses academic performance, relevance of study, and the quality of the statement of purpose.
  3. The grading table gives a qualification weight of 50, 40, or 30 by course year, and a marks weight of 50, 40, or 30 for the last year or last two semesters.
  4. Before joining, a selected intern must sign a confidentiality and non-disclosure agreement.
  5. The Ministry can end the internship for poor work, misconduct, or a rule break. Work you write stays the property of the Ministry.
