ILDR legislative department internship 2026 — unpaid, apply one month ahead

Institute of Legislative Drafting and Research (ILDR), Legislative Department

Added on 1 Oct 2026 by AAG Legal

What the notice says

ILDR legislative department internship 2026 is a full-time physical internship at the Institute of Legislative Drafting and Research, Legislative Department, Ministry of Law and Justice. The scheme does not print one closing date. It says the filled form and documents must go by speed post at least one month before the date you want to start. An advance copy can go to the email in the scheme. For a start in December 2026, that means the packet should reach ILDR by early November. Official scheme PDF: ILDR Internship Scheme. The department page that hosts the scheme is Internship/Fellowships on legislative.gov.in.

Legislative drafting is the work of writing a Bill so that a court, a ministry and a citizen can read the same sentence and mean the same thing. ILDR, set up in 1989, trains people for that work. This seat is not a court clerkship and it does not pay.

What ILDR legislative department internship 2026 actually is

The Institute says it uses the internship to build interest in legislative drafting, legal research and training across law, policy and regulation. You sit in Shastri Bhawan. Hours printed on the scheme are 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. unless the controlling officer permits otherwise. You sign a daily attendance register in the ILDR section. Dress is formal. The scheme calls this a full-time internship. You are not expected to pursue any other course or work during the period.

Duration starts from the date of joining. The printed band is one month, and it can go up to three months, as the Competent Authority decides. It can be renewed for one more term of either length. No seat total is printed. Selection is need-based.

Who should apply, and who should skip

Apply if you are a student of a 5-year integrated LL.B., a 3-year LL.B., or a 3-year B.A. (Law) course, and you can be in New Delhi on every working day of the stretch you ask for. The form asks your current year, year-wise marks, whether legislative drafting or legal research is part of your curriculum, moot-court details, and a 50-word reason for joining ILDR. The scheme does not print a minimum percentage, a year-of-study cut-off, or an age cap. Do not add a cut-off that a coaching page invented.

Skip if you need a stipend. Paragraph 4.1 says no remuneration, allowance or expense shall be paid or reimbursed, and ILDR takes on no employment liability. Skip if you cannot get a character certificate from your Head, Principal or Dean, or from a First Class Magistrate or a First Class Gazetted Officer. Skip if you cannot carry a Police Clearance Certificate on joining day for the entry pass. Skip if a WhatsApp handle asks for a fee to “arrange” this seat. The scheme prints no application fee.

How selection works

ILDR selects on a need basis. Selection needs approval of the Competent Authority. That decision is final. ILDR may revise the scheme when it finds it necessary. There is no printed written test or interview round. On joining you sign an undertaking on the code of conduct. You may be given study, research or other work connected to the Department. Material you prepare is the property of the Department.

Confidentiality is strict. You must not disclose confidential information. Access to classified files, and to some rooms, can be restricted. A breach is tied to legal consequences in the jurisdiction of Delhi only. The Department may end the internship at any time without giving reasons. If you want to leave early, you must give prior written intimation.

Library use is for reference only. Borrowing of books or journals is not extended to interns. You submit a weekly progress report, and a complete report of work done at the end. A certificate issues only on satisfactory completion, and only if attendance is at least 90 percent of working days. Below that, no certificate.
